Seasons in Costa Rica

Costa Rica offers a variety of climates and environments throughout the country at various times of the year. As one of the most biodiverse places on the planet, Costa Rica hosts over half a million species.

Surrounded by both Pacific and Atlantic coasts, the country’s geographical position determines its exposure to predominantly wet seasons on the Caribbean Sea of the Atlantic coast, and a mixture of wet and dry seasons on the Pacific coast. Within the more elevated areas of the central valley and capital city of San Jose, you can experience cooler climates. The mix of climate and weather systems throughout the country contribute to the rich biodiversity of the land.

The area of the Southern Nicoya Peninsula can be easily divided into two main seasons, Winter and Summer. Winter season is also known as the Rainy season, Green season, or Low season. This season usually happens during the months of May to November. Those that are familiar find many appealing factors to visiting or living in the area during this time of year, such as rental prices being reduced to almost half, less crowds, more sightings of wildlife on land and whales within the waters, rich vibrant and lush green colors from the fresh rain reviving the flora, with the ability to still enjoy many perfect sunny days at the beach.

As a buyer, there are benefits to investing in an area during the Green Season. Many properties sell at lower prices at this time of year, there is less competition when it comes to placing offers, and there is a possibility of the closing process happening more quickly due to less purchases happening in the area. Additionally, purchasing property as an investor or business opportunity during this season allows for ample time to prepare the space prior to the influx of tourism during the summer months of high season. Sellers also face many benefits of getting ready to sell their properties during this time of year. They are able to take advantage of the market and list at a lower price in order to sell more rapidly. They can also use this season to make any updates, modifications, and renovations to their property in order to list it at a higher price during the summer season. Sellers can use the lower season to find the right real estate agent to work with and begin the listing process, including taking pictures while everything looks green and full of color. This allows for the agent to prepare the listing’s post and have it ready to publish prior right away to attract the right buyers.

Summer season, also known as the Dry season or High season, takes place in the months of December through April. Main attractions of the high season are the clear skies and sunny weather. A perfect time for travelers looking to escape dark, snowy, cold weather. This area of the Nicoya Peninsula is surrounded by white sand beaches and a plethora of outdoor activities. For surfing enthusiasts, this time of year guarantees great waves and clear waters. Things to take into consideration while traveling during this time of year are that it tends to be much harder to get reservations for rental spaces. Reservations need to be made months in advance. Also, prepare for a significant price increase during this time of year. Due to it being an internationally popular time to travel, the area will be more crowded and you can expect an increase in traffic on the roads and waiting period at various establishments. The upside to this time of year is that there are much more activities going on in the area and all businesses are up and running at extended hours. You will likely find a live music performance at most restaurants and bars throughout the week. Also, there tend to be many more nightlife events and parties going on in the area during this time of year. Summer is in full swing during these months!

Due to the high traffic of travelers, we see there is an increase in investment in the area during this time of year. Many foreigners come to the area and fall in love with the tropical landscape and decide this is where they would like to reside full time. Others see it as an excellent opportunity to begin a business and take advantage of the seasonal tourism industry within the peninsula. This is an optimal period for sellers to list their properties. We have seen a trend in the market with a high increase of sales during the summer months. Buyers can anticipate a wide range of inventory for purchasing within this season as well.

Whether it is Summer/High/Dry season or Winter/Low/Rainy/Green season, there is always a reason to visit Costa Rica. The country offers an abundance of enjoyable qualities all year round for any type of visitor to appreciate.
