Costa Rica is a top choice for digital nomads in Central America. Westerners typically can enter Costa Rica visa-free for up to ninety days, but many find this insufficient to fully experience the country. Responding to this demand, Costa Rica introduced a digital nomad visa in 2022, allowing foreigners to stay for up to a year.

Costa Rica Digital Nomad Visa

What Is a Digital Nomad Visa?

Costa Rica is one of the few countries with a digital nomad visa. Digital Nomad Visas allow remote workers to legally reside and work in a country other than their home country. Unlike tourist visas, which can be problematic for remote work due to legal restrictions, digital nomad visas are typically valid for 12 months or more, often with multiple entries and potential for renewal, depending on the country. Applicants must meet specific requirements, such as demonstrating a stable income and providing necessary documentation.

Why Move to Costa Rica?

  • Natural Beauty: Costa Rica, a biodiverse gem in Central America, boasts nearly 6% of the world's biodiversity. The country features mountain villages, waterfalls, lakes, and volcanoes, making it a paradise for nature lovers.
  • Ideal Conditions for Beach Hopping: With both Caribbean and Pacific coastlines, Costa Rica offers fantastic beaches. The weather is consistent year-round, with temperatures ranging from 23 to 25 degrees Celsius.
  • Tax Benefits: Digital nomads are exempt from income tax on earnings generated abroad and do not have to pay import taxes on essential work equipment.

Equipped for Digital Nomads

  • Recognizing its potential as a remote work hub, Costa Rica introduced the digital nomad visa under General Law No. 8764. This Costa Rica remote worker visa allows remote workers to legally stay and work in the country for up to a year, with the possibility of renewal for another year. Digital Nomad Visa requirements include that applicants must be self-employed or employed by a foreign company and show proof of sufficient monthly income to support themselves and any dependents.

Digital Nomad Application Procedure

Foreign nationals can apply for the Costa Rica digital nomad visa under the sub-category of Stay (Estancia) for Remote Workers and Service Providers, either digitally or in person. If applying in person, applicants must visit the Foreign Nationals Administration Service Platform with all required documents. The application is processed within two weeks, and upon approval, the applicant can enter Costa Rica. Once in the country, they have three months to obtain an immigration accreditation document from the Costa Rica immigration department.

What Documents Are Required?

Costa Rica Digital Nomad Visa requirements:

  • A signed application form
  • Twelve months of bank statements showing a stable monthly income of at least $3,000 ($4,000 for families)
  • A receipt of $100 payment to the Government of Costa Rica
  • Proof of health insurance for the duration of the stay
  • A copy of the photo page of the applicant's passport and the Costa Rican entry stamp
  • Marriage and birth certificates, if applicable
  • A medical certificate for any disabled applicant or dependent
  • Proof of relationship for senior citizen dependents

All documents must be officially translated into Spanish. To renew the visa, applicants must prove they have resided in Costa Rica for at least 180 days.

Does the Visa Lead to Residency?

No, the Costa Rica Digital Nomad Visa allows for a maximum two-year stay but does not provide a path to permanent residency.
